Summary

The conclusion for this week’s blog as a group had a similar theme according to each member’s post.  For the first question as to why Adaline’s father and siblings did nothing when PLT was attacked, the group as a whole felt that the reason was because of the fighting hierarchies for power in the family.  The majority of members agreed that Niang’s dominance in the family is undeniable, and for this reason the father might have been trying to show some dominance over his own family by putting on a show with Jackie the ferocious dog.  Likewise, for question two, the group agreed that the Adaline’s siblings too recognize the power of Niang over the family, and notice the different treatment Niang gives to her own children verses her step-children.  This is especially noticed by Big Sister who, as the group agrees, longs for Niang’s acceptance as well as her power.  This is shown when Big Sister takes on a Niang type role at the end of chapter 12 by blaming Aunt Baba for her own devious schemes to keep jewelry from her stepmother.  Furthermore, the fact that Big Sister leaves on her honeymoon with a clear conscious shows how deeply devious she has become, it would seem she has succeeded in becoming a second Niang.
