It is quite clear while reading Chinese Cinderella that Adeline faces many hardships in her home life. One instance in particular that the author wrote about that stuck with me was when the duckling she got as a pet is used to test the family dog. Adeline’s father grabs her duck, PLT, and uses her to see if he dog will obey his command. In the end however, the duckling gets killed. The stepmother’s presence had already been affecting father and the other members of the family to at this point. They all learn to fear and in a way follow Niang because of the power she holds in the family. Big sister is especially affected by Niangs character. Even though Niang is seen as mean by big sister, big sister wants to gain her favor so she will get special treatment like Niang’s real children do. She wants to please Niang because she treats her poorly, so she yearns for her approval. The other family members also do not stand up to her because they too see her as an authoritative figure.
