Chapter twelve ends with Big Sister lying to Niang about the jade necklace that was given to her from Grand Aunt for her wedding. By this point, Big Sister has already left her siblings and joined the “dark side.” She is about to be married and leave the house forever to live away with her new family. Therefore, this was a deciding move for Big Sister in cutting ties and strengthening new ones. She had to figure out which relationship would be the most beneficial to her in the long run. It was evident that Niang now held all the power in her father’s house so Big Sister aligned herself with Niang. In order to be accepted, Big Sister had to be just like Niang was-manipulative. Big Sister had to become like her stepmother in order to gain her trust and favor so that she still had strength even after she had left. Big Sister grew up seeing Niang come into a family and, over time, taking all of the power. The only way she knew how to gain power was by observing Niang manipulating everyone around her. Big Sister grew up to emulate the only strong female figure she had in her life-the despised Niang.
