Summary

 

To summarize, each of us agreed Adeline’s friends from school are her “escape” from home; they care about her and respect her, especially Wu Chun-mei. Wu Chun-mei plays a huge role in Adeline’s childhood life. There is such a large contrast between Wu Chun-mei, who seems to have everything going for her with plenty of money, a supportive family, and popularity with friends, and Adeline, and yet Wu Chun-mei chooses to stick by Adeline’s side, constantly asking her over even though she knows she can’t. Adeline’s time with the Schillings was similarly expressed by everyone as well; that they provided kindness and support that Adeline has never seen from her own family. Adeline really needed a family like this, yet she is stuck with her father and Niang, and siblings who treat her horribly. But because of these bursts of support and kindness by her friends and relatives in her life, she was able to overcome all the hardships she went through and come out a better, stronger person.
