                On a school holiday Adeline decides to go behind her parents back and attend a birthday party at her friends house. After the part Adeline rushes home to beat her parents, however her stepmother is already there and is suspicions of Adeline intentions. But because Adeline had made the mistake of giving her friend her phone number, her friend happens to call exposing the truth to Adeline stepmother. She is then called a liar and screamed at by her hateful stepmother. Later on when Adeline wins class president, her friends decide to come to her house to bring gifts to congratulate her. This surprises Adeline and her stepmother does not take kindly to the surprise visit. She screams at Adeline and hits her while telling her friends aren’t welcome. I think that Adeline friends felt uncomfortable and bad for their friend. They had no idea that Adeline’s home life wasn’t what she made it out to be. To ensure an incident like this wouldn’t happen again Adeline’s parents fly her to a different school where there is turmoil due to war. There she is saved by her stepmothers sister’s family who is much nicer than Niang. The Shillings treat Adeline like a human being and part of their family for the time she is with them. She gets to experience a positive home life for the first time in a long time whereas her parents didn’t even seem to love her.
