Summary
Stereotype threat is a concept that most people think of as something distant. Individuals are subjected to this on a day to day basis and it is a constant headline on television and newspapers. Yet, it is clear that we have all been subjected to a negative stereotype threat at one point or another. All of our experiences are based on limitations through ethnicity or gender. I think it is important to consider that although we are young, most of our experiences have been events that have occurred before we reached adulthood. This goes on to show that there is something inherently wrong with the way in which people are perceived in our society. Even though this seems like part of a bigger problem, it is a consolation that learning about this concept in a classroom setting allows us to put stereotype threat in perspective; not only at a social level, but on a personal level. We are able to recognize this problem and think about how we are affected by it to make sure that we do not perpetuate this onto others.
