Horace Mann believed in providing education for all children, that they should all have the opportunity to receive free education.  It was thought that children were more likely to do well and succeed if the schooling was free, thus relieving the pressure and cost of their education. Mann also stressed education for women, not in the same way men would receive education but to have their own particular education.  This was a critical aspect of social change and very contrary to the accepted practices.  Typically women were considered to be house wives only, Mann, believed that women could bring and add different talents to society that men could not. In fact it was believed that educating women would serve to provide the society with suitable future teachers.  There is no doubt that Mann had a great influence on making improvements in the education system, that was different than what the simple churches had to offer.  Children could not only attend schools at an affordable rate but they were also able to receive such education in an acceptable environment.
