My name is Mary Rojas and I am a senior double majoring in English and Education. I plan to pursue teaching as a career.
I was born in Mexico, but I have lived in Los Angeles my whole life. When I think of home, my mind roams the streets of Echo Park and Silverlake; the vibrant murals that give homage to my Mexican roots, and the slit-your-wrists traffic of the city. My parents would take my siblings and I to Echo Park every other weekend. We enjoyed the scenery of the city skyline and the time spent together as a family. There is literally no other place in the world I rather be than in Los Angeles.
I have been very blessed to have many influential individuals in my life that have shaped me into the person I am today. However, my parents have made the most impact in my life. They have made many sacrifices to ensure my siblings and I could pursue a higher education. They are the embodiment of hard work and ambition. Not to mention, their twenty-five year marriage is testament to the existence of soul mates.
I am in the oldest of three children and yet, I have learned so much from my younger siblings. They are such unique individuals and are constantly teaching me to be patient and understanding. We know each other extremely well-from each other's favorite color, to each other's pet peeves. Their love and support make me a better person.
Literature soothes my soul when I am feeling melancholic. Ever since I was a child, books have enabled me to escape reality when the going gets rough, and has given me great insight into the components that make up the most inner workings of my being.
