Adeline is a prime example for seeing different perspectives and being able to imagine constructive solutions, because her situation is quite bad and yet she still has the determination to continue on with life; she’s holding onto the idea that things will get better. So many of the stories she’s read have a happy ending, so why can’t she? She can compare herself to these characters, as well as contrast them, and see how her life is and what she can do to change it based on what she’s seen from the books she’s read. Just because the characters are fictional doesn’t mean they can’t have an impact on someone. This part of Adeline reminds me of myself in the aspect of seeking refuge in books, and feeling the comfort of being temporarily part of another’s story. It’s a feeling that’s hard to describe, because how could a bunch of paper with words on them be a comfort to someone? The stories are the crucial part though; the stories that come alive in your mind can make you believe anything is possible. I feel like that is what Adeline is feeling when she reads, it is not only an escape from her reality but also a source of motivation.

As for Niang, she fits the Narcissistic Personality disorder quite well. She lacks empathy completely, and she does not return any positive vibes or attention she might get. We don’t, however, know the reason why she is this way, if it’s because of how she grew up or if she has low self-esteem. There is a chance Niang’s actions are a “coping mechanism” to deal with her own “perceived worthlessness”.
