There was this girl back in middle school was very quiet and very awkward, but she wanted to make friends so she attempted to converse with a group of people she knew from elementary school. The problem was they were discussing popular music on the radio, music she didn’t even listen to. This made things very difficult for the girl, because she couldn’t join in the conversation since she had no opinions about this topic. She still tried to join in though, slowly she scooted into a small opening within the circle. A couple of people who recognized her acknowledged her entrance by saying hi, but then they continued talking about the latest song, and she was stuck, unable to say anything but not wanting to leave the circle. So instead she just listened, and laughed when the others laughed. She still didn’t feel included though, not until one of the girls came up to her personally and talked to her about music. The girl found out she didn’t really know the music the group was talking about, so she offered to put some of the songs onto her ipod. She was extremely thankful to the girl and gladly accepted, and then the girl was able to listen to these popular songs, and could have an opinion of her own to contribute to future conversations. Because of this the girl became more confident with interacting and conversing with others, all thanks to that girl’s small act of kindness. It was extremely effective, and she thanked the girl by sharing the music she enjoyed with her as well.
