Education today is one of the most important topics talked about in our nation's capitol. The United States provides the world's best educational institutions and degrees received from these institutions are highly esteemed. There is a societal pressure to receive education and strive for higher education in colleges and graduate schools. However, this was not the case when Horace Mann became the Secretary of the Massachusettes Board of Education in 1837. Many looked at public schools as a way to teach only the basics of learning. Mann's opposers believed that public schools did not have to be a place of providing opportunities, as it stands today, but a place to teach the basics.
