Education was not heavily emphasized during colonial times. There was no need for it, because it was not integral to the lives these early colonists lived. Most were farmers and their children learned everything they needed at home. However, the ability to read and write did come from the church. The early colonists were religious people and they saw the importance in being able to read and understand the bible. The New England colonies were the most educated as it was most vital to their way of life. Many of the children of the wealthy families went to school or had private tutors. The south was slower to adopt a formal educatin structure as most of the jobs were agricultural. The middle colonies were the least educated and formal education began the latest.
