                 Adeline finds her passion of reading later on in the book. When she reads, she is able to enter into the lives of the characters she is reading about. She lived a life that was characterized by only fear, abandonment, and disappointment. However, by reading about characters from all over the world that have dealt with emotions and situations Adeline never has, she is able to experience all of that vicariously through the people she reads about. When she reads, she is able to escape the realities of her situation-her family, Niang, and the pain she has gone through. She has only one life, but when she reads about other people, she is able to experience the lives of the hundreds of lives she reads about. People with Narcissistic Personality Disorder are characterized with having an inflated view of self and being egotistic. Niang fits the profile of someone with Narcissistic Personality Disorder because everything she does, from manipulating her husband to pushing out her stepchildren, is a result of what she wants. In order to accomplish her goal of having all the power and always getting her way, she manipulates everyone so no one is able to deny her. She does this because she feels entitled to everything that is around her. She has a strong understanding that she deserves everything she has.
