Adeline’s life at home consisted of loneliness and isolation. Not only was she the youngest one among her siblings, but she is also blamed for the death of her mother and placed on the sidelines to make room for her new half siblings. The biggest suspect for her loneliness is not hatred, but indifference. She does not feel her presence is noticed in the family. Therefore, she is ecstatic when her father notices her and congratulates her for the award she received. Her sister’s contempt for her concretes her understanding that Father accepts and elevates her to a higher station. However, this is short-lived as she is once again unnoticed by the members in the family. Aunt Baba and her school are the two things that continue to give her their attention and recognition. This encourages Adeline to continue to work hard and believe in herself-thriving rather than succumbing to the indifference of her family. Instead of being a shadow, Adeline finds room in Aunt Baba and her school to become somebody.
