In our educational text Help Your Child Thrive, chapter five discusses the importance of books and movies in a child’s life. Adeline was always alone, mistreated, and disliked by the family she had. Because no one was there to support her really she turned to the adventures of books to transport her somewhere else and survive growing up in a very unsupportive household. Books and movies allow children to escape for their realities and learn and grow through the lesson learned in the book. This is why movies and books can be such a valuable tool for children growing up. Mostly when Adeline read she would get to forget about her horrible stepmother Niang and how troubled her home life was. Niang is an especially interesting character to discuss due to her idea of self worth. Niang is very Narcissistic character in the books and exemplifies this personality disorder by believing she is the held of the household and what she says goes no matter what. She completely controls the family and they live in fear of her because of this. Symptoms of Narcissistic Personality Disorder is an excessive need for admiration, a sense of entitlement, inability to handle criticism ect. Niang shows the reader she has all of these qualities through the book.
