After reading the first couple chapters of Chinese Cinderella we get to know about a young girl named Adeline who is born to a wealthy family. However after her birth her mother ends up dying days after, leaving her family with a feeling of hate towards her. Because her siblings believed it was Adeline’s fault for their mother’s death, they ignored her and left her out at in their home life. Adeline was considered bad luck and was treated as such. Her siblings abused her physically as well as called her names as she grew up. Her father barely ever recognized her accomplishments and she had little support at home. He only started showing recognition after Adeline brings home a medal from school. Because she yearns for her family’s approval she starts to work very hard in school. The school she attends helps tremendously to give her the support she desires, and her Aunt Baba aids in supporting her as well. The language that Aunt Baba uses with Adeline such as calling her my treasure when Adeline comes home with a medal, and asking her questions about the event that shows Adeline she cares about her. The school encouraged Adeline to make good choices. Adeline describes it as, her school doesn’t look down on her like her family does, she felt like she belonged there. She consistently wins medals and is recognized for her hard work. This allowed her to see school is such a positive light, that she only wanted to work harder.
